Beetle Mania

Students in this first grade class explored patterns and symmetry found in nature by cutting folded paper to create symmetrical beetles.  Just like the many species of beetle in the world, each student-made beetle has unique markings and a unique shape.

We discussed several big ideas related to the environment and natural wonder as we worked, such as:

How can we transform something many people are afraid of, such as insects, into something beautiful?

What are some ways that artists find inspiration in nature and use that inspiration in their work?

What can we find when we take a closer look at something small?
